VERNACULAR BENCH
BENCH
In 2022 I was challenged to create something for stave hill ecological park with the prompts
1. make visitors think about the ecology in the park
2. prompt interaction / engagement
3. make us experience the park differently
4. are children focused and educational
5. engages other senses than the visual such as musical instruments
6. will be seen in optimum condition at all times, so a maintenance plan needs to be
included in the proposal
Throughout this project I wanted to use my experience of initially visiting Stave Hill Eco Park and how I felt with in the spaces.
After my first interaction with the location and its rich surroundings I found that the park didn’t offer enough seating to enable users so sit and stop to reflect on the space they are in. I wanted to use this experience to enable me on the direction of the project and create furniture that had a connection to S.H.E.P and the uses. After discussing my idea with Rebecca, Shane and Stefan(the people overseeing the project) I was told that the place to make a chair was in the orchid (memorial garden).
I wanted to create something for the park with fell wood from the park, I also was interested in traditional greenwood methods of construction and keeping it simple to make people think about only the wood. I also wanted to include my experience as an Australian and utilise traditional indigenes techniques of back burning to connect my own ecological experience with this project
